Scottish Government committee votes against retailer levy
Published: 27 January 2011
The Local Government and Communities Committee of the Scottish Parliament yesterday voted to annul the proposed large retailer levy - an outcome welcomed by the SRC.
If passed, the levy would result in retail stores in Scotland with a rateable value of more than £750,000 paying extra taxes. The measure will now be voted on by the full Scottish parliament next week.
The Scottish Retail Consortium was pleased wit the outcome. It is strongly opposed to the introduction of the levy, which it believes is inequitable and damaging to growth and job creation in Scotland.
SRC director Fiona Moriarty said: "The Local Government and Communities Committee should be congratulated on doing such a thorough job of investigating this important issue. Members of the committee have taken a level-headed look at the potential economic impact of this levy and wisely taken the view that it is not in the interest of the Scottish economy or Scottish jobs."
She concluded: "We very much hope the Scottish Parliament will follow suit and vote to prevent it coming into force."
