Snow thaws to give John Lewis record sales week
Published: 13 December 2010
Department store posts sales of £121m last week - the most it has ever taken in a seven-day period - as shoppers flood the high street following the snow.
It is the first time John Lewis has surpassed the £120m mark ands is up 8% on its biggest week in 2009, which had, until last week, been its all-time record.
Items to decorate the home and welcome guests over Christmas were very popular in the week to December 11, with throws, cushions and candles flying off the shelves. Sewing machines also saw a significant increase in sales, while giftware naturally performed well.
John Lewis' online sales have been soaring, with the website reporting its biggest ever day on December 6. Sales were up 45% last week, with another 'mega Monday' expected online today.
John Lewis director selling operations David Barford said: "We are thrilled to have exceeded our record week from last year, and by such a margin. The thaw in the weather has no doubt helped, and shoppers have been out in force throughout the week.
"Even in areas where snow has persisted, we have seen the determination of our customers to deliver a perfect Christmas for their friends and family, whether that is selecting presents or decorating the home."
