Spread Garden Supplies ceases trading
Spread Garden Supplies ceased trading on Friday August 29.

A telephone call to the specialist garden goods supplier confirmed rumours that its two depots in St Helens, Merseyside, and Beckford near Tewkesbury, Gloucester are in the process of closing with staff being made redundant.

The closures follow a review by directors of the business who wrote to retailers, staff and suppliers in June this year warning that the depots could shut.

In the letter, Spread's managing director Ken Brizland said closures would be precipitated by Bayer Garden UK's decision to stop supplying it at the end of the 2008 season.

Spread was also fighting trading losses over the last three years. Sales as the wholesaler fell 15% from £25.8m in 2004/05 to £21.9m in 2005/06.
