Depots in St Helens, Merseyside and Beckford, Gloucestershire face seeing doors closed
The directors of Spread Garden Supplies have written to retailers, staff and suppliers warning that its two depots in Merseyside and Gloucestershire could close.
According to gardenforum, which has seen the letter, Spread's managing director Ken Brizland explains that the potential closures 'have been precipitated by the decision taken by Bayer Garden UK to stop supplying Spread at the end of the 2008 season as part of its distributor rationalisation strategy'.
He added that the combined loss of the income and trading losses over the last three years have prompted the depots' possible closure.
According to Wholesale Leaders, a DIY Week supplement, sales at Spread fell 15% from £25.8m in 2004/05 to £21.9m in 2005/06.
Spread has issued no comment as yet.
