Employees at 4Home Superstores in Co Cork took part in protest over redundancies after it was announced store was to close the next day.
16 employees at 4Home Superstores in Co Cork, South West Ireland, staged a sit-in protest for more than 24 hours after being told that the outlet was to close the next day and that they would only receive statutory redundancy, despite many of the workers having been with the company for more than 25 years.
The demonstration began on Thursday, August 13 after workers were informed of the store's closure. Protestors finally agreed to go home on Friday night after the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) intervened and 4Home conceded to enter into talks with unions to agree a revised severance deal.
The store opened as usual on Saturday and employees returned to work. The store will remain open for the duration of the talks.
4Home's management is due to meet with Mandate trade union today.
UPDATE: Talks have broken down between 4Home management and the union. The dispute has now been taken to the LRC and talks will resume again on Monday, August 24.
