A recent nationwide survey from JJ Roofing Supplies concluded that a high number of British people don't feel confident tackling basic DIY tasks on their own.
The survey quizzed respondents on how many DIY tasks they do on a yearly basis compared with the number of outstanding jobs. 28% said they have between four and 10 DIY jobs that need doing around the house, with the average Brit only tackling three tasks a year.
The following results were recorded:
· 28% admitted their DIY skills were poor
· 35.4% admitted they guess how to do DIY tasks
· One in four don't know how to change a fuse
· 26% said they have either broken light fixtures while trying to fix them or have ruined house decor by trying to spruce it up
· Nearly 9% of Brits have found themselves in need of medical help after attempting DIY
And, it seems, those who can't do are paying others to do it for them. The survey found 70% of respondents said they had paid someone else to do DIY tasks from fixing a leaky roof to putting flat pack furniture together.
When asked what they would be able to do, 90% said changing a light bulb. Only 38% would feel confident fixing a leaking tap and only 23% would attempt to fix home insulation. Of the younger generation, 10% of millenials - those born in the 80s and younger - said the last time they'd done a DIY task was a year ago, while 40% rely on YouTube to show them what to do.
In terms of jobs, millenials are more comfortable cleaning windows and mowing the lawn and least confident changing car tires or bricklaying. 32% said they didn't own a tool box and 25% have paid someone else to do their DIY.
