Tesco and Dobbies first new-build venture in Scotland
Published: 7 November 2013
Dobbies and parent company, Tesco, have announced plans for a new joint development store in East Kilbride - its first new build in Scotland.
The site already has planning permission for a standalone supermarket and a Dobbies Garden Centre, but the plans will see the two stores merge to share an entrance.
The companies are holding a public consultation exhibition early next month and this will form part of a new detailed planning application, which will allow them to deliver this new development.
This follows similar moves by Dobbies and Tesco, as permission was given for a new
shared site at King's Lynn and the Dobbies store in Inverness,
which opened in October, was
built next to an existing Tesco store.
The new development will bring over 400 jobs to East Kilbride, and the Garden Centre will offer more than 10,000 plants, shrubs and trees and include extensive outdoor areas and a specialist aquatics department within an attractive landscaped environment. It will also house a Food Market, offering locally-grown produce from Lanarkshire, as well as a restaurant.
Director of property at Dobbies, Stuart Wright, said: "Our plans for East Kilbride brings a new-generation retail and garden centre to the area which will not only offer quality, range and value to customers who love their home and garden; but also a unique day-out destination for all the family to enjoy."
