Essential reading for retailers and suppliers in the home improvement market

The snow: a retail perspective

Published: 7 January 2010
DIY Week wants to hear how the snow has affected your business. Two retailers we spoke to have had very different experiences, but with one thing in common... rock salt.
The snow: a retail perspective
"The snow has made business slow but it's actually quite good for us because we would normally use this time for any renovations and tidying up the shop floor. We've been using the past couple of days as tidy up time and anyone else who isn't doing the same is mad.
Everyone has been coming in asking for rock salt, snow shovels and sledges. I think we sold something like 100 snow shovels last week and now we can't get hold of any more. We were offered sledges before Christmas as well. Solus had them but you had to buy 200 and you think 'will we sell them?' but now we could probably sell 1000.
We have remained open the whole time, with that good British Bulldog spirit. We've muddled through and are just tidying up and making sure we're ready for the spring.
It's good for us because it's normally 'hard winter, good summer'. That's what happened last year and, if we haven anything like last year, it would be fantastic. I think it's definitely going to be an uphill struggle because last season was so good. It would be great to match that."
John Hoare, commercial director, Woodcote Green Nurseries, Surrey

"We haven't really been affected by the snow - we're a coastal town so we don't get as much as they do inland. Some delivery drivers have been coming in telling us how bad it is further in though. What we have had has melted but we've had people coming in asking for rock salt nearly every day. If only I'd known, I'd have got some more in."
Lennie Watson, Watson Home Hardware, Sutton on Sea

  • Is your experience the same? Did you see it coming and get your salt orders in early? We want to know about how you prepared, how business has been, and what your customers have been asking for...and if you have any photos of the snow where you are, we'll include them in an online gallery on diyweek.net.

I do not have a seasonal business, so I did not buy any sledges or snow shovels, however I had need to move the compacted snow both at home and at the shop. My method of doing this was to take a normal 9" household shovel from stock and remove the wooden handle replacing it with a 1 1/8" 5 foot broom handle. The efficiency in use has amazed my neighbours. It has a retail cost of less than 5 and works even on compacted snow being sharp enough to get under and then having the leverage to lift a chunk for flipping out of the way.

Does anyone else get fed up with the constant winging about how unprepared we are for this weather? The countries we're comparing with get it every year, we get a couple of days every 5 years. I would be interested to know how much money would have been wasted if we had been properly prepared every winter for the last 30 years - we don't get enough snow to justify the cost, i'd rather see the money spent on the NHS. So please stop moaning and have some fun, it will be gone next week.

We sold out of Rock Salt on Monday and the Goverment has requesitioned the rest of it for the Highways. We are being told this may last till Feb. We are being asked 20 times a day everyday for rock salt but can not get it to supply to the public. Our business has gone quiet as Builders can not build in this weather.

We bought 200 sledges in November, sold all, managed to get another 100 but could also have sold 1000. Rock salt a big seller, sold 300 bags, waiting for a delivery of another 150, sold water softener and dishwasher salt in the interim but have no more. Didn't buy anywhere near enough snow shovels! We are in Gloucestershire and don't usually get any snow!!
