Thieves raid and set fire to garden centre premises
Published: 6 January 2011
Two men broke into and stole stock from containers at Bold Heath Garden Centre, before torching the site in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Merseyside Police were called at 2.40am on Wednesday, January 5 when the garden centre's alarm company spotted two men on the premises on the CCTV system.
While the burglars didn't gain access to any of the garden centre buildings, they managed to break into two large containers that were used to house stock at the rear of the site. After pilfering the contents, they then sparked a fire before fleeing the scene.
It is unknown exactly what or how much was taken in the raid but one report by a local paper suggested the thieves got away with as much as £30,000 of stock. Merseyside Police are awaiting a full stock check by Bold Heath Garden Centre, which is located on Mill Lane, Widnes, but confirmed that the containers held items such as garden furniture and radiators.
A spokesperson for the police force added that there was a significant amount of damage caused to the containers but, thankfully, not to the garden centre buildings. There are no witnesses and have been no arrests at this stage, while police wait to examine CCTV footage.
Merseyside Police said they will issue a local appeal but, in the meantime, anyone with information should call 0151 777 1532 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
