The managing director of Thompson Building Centres will travel to Everest's base camp next month for charity.
Anne Ganley sets off on April 30 as part of a group of 20 business people from across the North East in support of charities from that region with which she has a personal connection.
The money raised will be divided between St Benedict's Hospice in Sunderland, St Oswald's Hospice in Newcastle, The Bobby Robson Foundation, Wearside's Grace House, The Brothers In Arms campaign and the Salvation Army.
Mrs Ganley said: "This is definitely the challenge of a lifetime. Going to Everest is something I'd never even thought about but now that I've agreed to it I'm very excited and also want to try and raise as much as possible for the charities I support."
Thompson Building Centres has donated around £1m to charities over the years and Mrs Ganley is hoping to boost this total.
