TJ Hughes buyer to revive Lewis's dept store

Published: 3 August 2011
The company that has bought four TJ Hughes stores out of administration also plans to bring Liverpool department store Lewis's back to life.
Administrators Ernst & Young revealed this week that they had achieved a sale of TJ Hughes' Liverpool, Eastbourne, Glasgow and Sheffield stores to Lewis's Home Retail, the retail arm of supplier Benross Group.

According to a report today in the Liverpool Daily Post, Benross also bought the Lewis's name from receivers last month, following the closure in 2010 of Lewis's in Liverpool.

The iconic store had been one of the oldest independent department stores in the country, having been established in 1856, and its demise was seen as a significant blow for the city.

Now, Benross managing director Anil Juneja says he will be bringing the Lewis's name back to the high street.

He told the Liverpool Daily Post: "Lewis's was a brand that was well loved throughout the north west and I want to open a new store concept. I have signed for a new store and hope to open that later this year in Bury, but I am looking at Liverpool as well."

He also said he was considering buying more TJ Hughes stores out of administration, and that the acquisitions had been entirely funded by Benross.

I AM VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT LEWIS'S STORES, AS WAS MY EX-WIFE & MY MOTHER. I USED TO BROWSE AROUND THE LEICESTER & BIRMINGHAM STORES. IN ADDITION TO THE STORES BEING CREATED IN BURY & EVENTUALLY LIVERPOOL. COULD A STORE NOT BE RE-CREATED IN LEICESTER, AS THIS, I FEEL WOULD MAKE MANY LEICESTER VERY HAPPY. AS I AM A BUS DRIVER IN THE LEICESTER AREA, MANY OF MY PASSENGERS, FREQUENTLY TALK ABOUT THE HAPPY DAYS OF LEWIS'S. I CONSIDER THE WHOLE OF LEICESTER IS IN 'MOURNING' OVER THE SAD CLOSURE & DEMOLITION OF THIS FINE STORE IN 1994.
