Robert Walker takes on role of non-executive director and is likely to succeed Tim Stevenson as non-executive chairman.
Currently chairman of WH Smith plc, BCA Europe ltd, Americana International Holdings Ltd and non-executive director of Tate & Lyle plc, Mr Walker has been appointed non-executive director at Travis Perkins.
It is also the board's intention that he succeed Tim Stevenson as non-executive chairman with effect from the conclusion of the next Annual General Meeting in May 2010.
Mr walker spent his early career at Proctor & Gamble and McKinsey & Co, followed by 20 years with Pepsi Co Inc, culminating as division president.
Commenting on the appointment, Tim Stevenson said: "As our shareholders would expect, we have concluded a thorough search for my successor as chairman. The board is now pleased to confirm that Robert Walker has accepted the board's invitation to become a non-executive director and to become non-executive chairman in May next year.
"I have had a very rewarding eight years as chairman. The company has grown significantly, developed sustainable market leading positions and successfully met the challenges posed in both recessionary and expansionary periods.
"Robert will inherit a highly regarded management team and an exceptionally strong focus on outperformance. I look forward to working alongside him before he steps up to lead the board next year."
