Trouble in Poundland documentary to air tomorrow

A behind-the-scenes documentary about Britain’s budget retailer is set to hit our screens tomorrow evening, showing how its new management team battle to offer products cheaper than high-street rivals.
The ITV documentary shows a year in the life of Poundland, following the UK's vote to leave the EU, which saw the value of the pound plummet. The single-price point retailer was also under new management, following the acquisition of the business by Steinhoff International.
Voiced by Broadchurch’s Andrew Buchan, Trouble in Poundland goes behind the scenes at the discount retailer, showing everything from crunch-point meetings at head office, to new product development in the factory, and to the shop floor. The documentary is said to showcase the “savvy and shrewd ways” in which Poundland offers products to rival high street and big name brand competitors.
Last week Poundland announced plans to introduce a multi-price point range across its UK stores for the first time, moving away from its ‘everything for £1’ slogan. The strategy was announced in parent firm, Steinhoff International’s latest results, with other areas of focus to include expansion of product ranges to include clothing; optimisation of the store network; and collaboration with the greater Steinhoff group on supply chain initiatives.
Reporting its results for the half year ended March 31, 2017, Steinhoff revealed that Poundland had experienced positive like-for-like sales experienced in the first quarter, which continued into the second quarter (the first positive like-for-like growth since December 2014).
Trouble in Poundland will air on IT on Tuesday, June 20 at 9pm.
