Two more arrested in Jewson fraud probe
Published: 25 February 2009
Detectives investigating the alleged £1m fraud at builders merchants chain Jewson, which saw the sales director sacked last year, have arrested two more men.
A 48-year-old man from West Sussex and a 58-year-old man from Norfolk have been released on bail pending further enquiries. They were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to defraud.
Six men have now been arrested as part of the inquiry and will appear at a police station in Willenhall, West Midlands on April 25 and 26.
Among them is the company's former sales and marketing director Tony Newman, who was arrested on suspicion of fraud by abusing a position of trust.
The inquiry dates back to 2003 and in April 2008 irregularities were spotted in the company's accounts after a tip-off.
It is understood the investigation is looking into allegations of fraud relating to invoices sent between the firm and other businesses.
Jewson confirmed Newman was dismissed from his role as sales director and one other person, who had been employed by Jewson for less than two weeks, was also dismissed as a result of an internal investigation.
