United Carpets ad rapped over free fitting claim

Published: 30 April 2014
A United Carpets TV ad has been deemed to be misleading because it did not make it clear that there was a condition attached to free carpet fitting.
United Carpets ad rapped over free fitting claim
The ad's on-screen text stated 'Half price plus an extra 25% off plus every carpet fitted free'. This was accompanied by a voice-over saying 'Half price plus an extra 25% off plus free fitting when purchasing underlay'.

One viewer complained to the Advertising Standards Authority because they did not feel the ad made it clear that consumers would get free carpet fitting only if they bought underlay.

The ad watchdog agreed, because while the ad subsequently made further references to free carpet fitting, both on screen and in the voice-over, it did not repeat the fact that underlay must be bought to obtain the free fitting. It did not appear in the on-screen text and only appeared once in the voice-over.

It said that because the underlay condition was not referred to as often as the free fitting the ad was misleading.
