UPDATE: Hayes Garden World md trial delayed
Published: 24 January 2014
The jury in the
trial of the boss of leading Cumbrian garden centre Hayes Garden World has been discharged and the case postponed for five weeks.
Thomas Hayes, the managing director of the business, and his friend Derek Henderson are both accused of conspiring to pervert the course of justice. Mr Hayes was jailed in July 2012 after he crashed his Porsche when over the legal drink-drive limit, although both he and Mr Henderson had claimed that Mr Henderson had been the one in the driver's seat.
The case was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions and the pair are now on trial at Carlisle Crown Court to answer a charge of misleading the police and the courts over the identity of the driver. Both men deny the charge.
However, the trial, which started on Monday, has now been halted for legal reasons and the jury discharged. The case is set to resume on March 4.
