UPDATE: Plasplugs offices and staff both deserted

Published: 27 February 2009
With so much uncertainty surrounding Plasplugs DIY Week visited its Burton on Trent facility to get the truth behind the rumours...and found an empty building and confused staff.
UPDATE: Plasplugs offices and staff both deserted
The offices appeared to be completely unmanned. The car park, usually accessed via an electric barrier, was open to all and empty. The guard's hut was likewise unoccupied with a handwritten notice in the window explaining that the factory shop was closed for the day.

DIY Week did however meet two Plasplugs employees, who unfortunately, were unable to shed any light on the situation. They insisted that they knew nothing about it and had not been warned or informed about a potential closure, despite reports of a text message to staff to that effect earlier in the week. "We've been told nothing," said one middle-aged lady. "Nothing at all - as far as we know it might be open again on Monday."

It seems that the manufacturer may have closed its doors for the last time, but until more news is available no one is sure. Keep an eye on www.diyweek.net for more news on this story as it happens.

Looks like Plasplugs are going again. I've been told by one of their employees that they haven't been paid for three weeks, they're on stop with their carrier and have not got any stock to sell. Apparently the Turner tradition of taking too cash from the business continues

plasplugs are in administration and their stocks are being sold off, to smaller companies so temporarily they are still available but only until all stocks are gone.

Does anyone have instructions on how to use this product please? I bought it in B&Q last weekend. It's one of those peel to see instructions, but unfortunately when I peel it all peels off and I can't read the text. Obviously I have tried to contact the company to find out only to find out the company doesn't exist anymore.
Many thanks

Please, please, please can the administrators find a buyer for Plasplugs. I've used their wall plugs for as long as I can remember (c. 30 years?) - no other plug is as good.

I agree with William's comments It's down to the consumer to support the home market. I have always used plasplugs you know you can rely on the product. There is nothing which comes anywhere close. Does anyone still have stock of these?
Yes you have to pay more for British made unless you expect British workers to work for a bowl of rice. - No production, no industry, no employment, no taxes, no health service, third world country. It isn't difficult to see the sequence of events. Why havn't we got a British made website where you can buy direct from the manufacturers?
Much of the British manufacturing has already gone, but we have a lot in common with Germany it's time these two great countries united and pooled their talents, the destruction caused by the little twerp with the tash and his nazi mobsters continues to damage both countries.
Sorry to hear the comments of the workers of this company, I would like to hear managements comments.

I was a material suplier to plasplugs for 25 years. Yes there were good and bad times in terms of payment to me.Stuart Turner was always an honorable gentleman and always payed. This company was screwed by Homebase, who decided in Jan to reduce their payment run to PP. Not acceptable. so PP had to remove all their product initialing a massive debit note from HBS
Result,end of PP.
Message, kick Homebase in the unmentionables. DON'Y BUY FROM THEM EVER AGAIN. Let them feel the pain!

I`m not surprised - the Turners screwed the business for all they could get. They took every penny of profit out of business year in year out - greed got the better of them!

I am not sure if the sheds were to blame for the demise of PP, but I could name numerous companies that they have been responsible for the closure of after their bully boy tactics.
What we are left with is Cheap imported Muck from the far east, and a throw away society.
And they try to call themselvse eco friendly.

I have been selling there products now for over 21 years and it's a great shame to see them go. There is really no one in the market that has the same range of DIY fittings avalable in small packs for the public, I hope someone take over the company and re starts it again!

I was an employee some time ago. One of the reasons I left was the lack of support and genuine interest in the lifeblood of the company - its staff.

Don't blame the sheds for this collapse ....OK they are tough masters but in PP case look to their bank !

As a small Independant tile retailer who has sold Plasplugs products for over 12 years, I am really sorry to see it close. I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of the DIY sheds who have squeezed the life out of British Manufacturers. Plasplugs staff were helpful, efficient, polite, knowledgable and courteous, their products were well made, innovative and easily saleable.

Its crazy the big DIY sheds squeeze so much out of manufacturing companies holding them to ransom over cheap imports. I hope they feel good about themselves for being so price driven. I just hope that as other companies move to fill the gap left behind (and I am sure they will) that the Buyers of these powerful companies can let up a bit. We saw it with farmers and supermarkets. So why cant this sector work in partnership.

Another brand name gone and another sad day for a British employer.

Lets hope the public will start to wake up and smell the coffee! Vote with your feet and pound. Stop buying inferior quality products at inflated prices from retailers whose only interest is lining their investor s pockets which ultimately drives British manufacturers out of business.

Three for two, BOGOF and WIGIG, these are false offer prices and mask the true value of an item. It's time for the supermarkets and sheds to put something back into British industry, help drive the economy and make Britain Great again.

If is true then its a shame. I have one of the plasplugs cutters which works really well. And I am a pro tiler. But maybe that was their problem. Their wetsaws were so cheap and they last forever. I paid 50 for mine and it only needs a new cheap blade every now and then. If the shops were selling them on at 50 including VAT then no wonder Plasplugs were making so little money. Thats 42.50 before VAT. So they could have only been selling them to retail for prices like 26 to give B&Q a 40% margin. How can you make an electronic tool and sell it for 26 and expect to make a profit? The maths are all wrong.
