Sefton Council recommends that go ahead be given for 20 allotments on land at Dobbies Southport centre.
Following a planning meeting that took place on Wednesday, August 19, Dobbies has been granted approval to change the use of land at the rear of its Southport centre to accommodate 20 allotments, which will be rented out to the public.
Sefton Council has recommended that the allotments be approved, following the expiry of a press advertisement about the development on August 28. It stated that the proposal is in keeping with the designation of the site near Bentham's Way as a 'Greenspace' as part of the council's Adopted Unitary Development Plan.
Access to the 2,880 sq m site will be achieved via the existing entrance to the garden centre, so that local residents are not be affected by the change.
One of the conditions on developing the plot is that Dobbies construct raised beds with 'a geo-textile membrane seal between the existing ground and the proposed growing medium', to avoid any land contamination issues.
