Waitrose is looking to extend its presence in the horticultural products market by trialling a small garden centre.

The up-market retailer, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership, has opened the centre next to its supermarket in Newbury, Berkshire.

Waitrose already sells flowers and plants in its supermarkets and online but is clearly now hoping to explore the possibility of expanding the offer into gardening lines.

Waitrose is remaining tight-lipped about its intentions. A spokesperson told diyweek.net: "Waitrose has an established flower and plant offer and we are exploring ways of extending this at our Newbury branch, with a modest unit close to our shop...any plans are confidential at this stage."
