Wickes bosses to pedal 300 miles for Leukaemia charity

Published: 8 June 2012
The DIY retailer's marketing director Rob Murray and former md Jeremy Bird will join more than 200 of their colleagues in training for the Big 10 Cycle Challenge this month.
Raising money for blood cancer charity Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, Wickes employees will cycle a total of 3,500 miles in 10 days. This will span all 217 Wickes stores across the country, from Inverness in the Scottish Hylands to Truro, Cornwall. Some have signed up to pedal more than 100 miles a day as part of the challenge.

Mr Bird and Mr Murray will don the Lycra for more than 300 miles between the Wickes stores in Inverness and Glasgow from June 12 - 14. Mr Murray said: "Over 200 of us will be cycling way further than we ever thought possible. Even though we have trained hard the challenge of vistiing every Wickes store will test us to the limit.

"The pain will be worth it for such a good cause as Leukaemia and Lymphona research."

The Wickes cyclists are hoping to raise a total of £50,000 for the charity and have so far had more than 200 donations to their Just Giving page.

Leukaemia and Lymphoma Reasearch chief executive Cathy Gilman said: "Best of luck to everyone at Wickes for taking part in the Big 10 Cycle Challenge. It's a massive challenge and the money they raise will help improve treatments for all patients with blood cancers, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma."
