Wickes staff step up for charity

Published: 4 June 2010
Colleagues at 28 Wickes stores across the country take on a 341-mile relay walk from Preston, in Lancashire, to Havant, in Hampshire, to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, the DIY chain's national charity partner.
Teams from each Wickes store will complete a section of the route each day, trekking to the next store on the route, where they will pass on the baton for the next day. Distances between the stores naturally vary, with some Wickes colleagues facing a 20-mile slog during their leg of the challenge.

The DIY chain's Preston store will kick off the first leg on June 1, with eight colleagues walking 10 miles to Chorley. The epic trek finishes 26 days later when staff in Fareham, Hampshire, stride to the finish line 11 miles away in Havant.

The walk has been organised by Dawn Shale, who is a showroom assistant at Preston Wickes. She said: "All of our stores hold lots of different events throughout the year to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. As it's the charity's 50th anniversary year, we wanted to do something a bit special. We had the idea here in the Preston store and we asked our colleagues up and down the country to get involved - it's proving to be a really popular and fun event."

Director of fundraising at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Kate White said: "Good luck to everyone taking part - it's a brilliant idea and a really unique challenge to take on. All the money they raise will go towards vital research into better treatments and cures for patients with leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma."
