Builders merchants chain Wolseley has announced it will close its distribution centres in Didcot and Chorley as part of an efficiency drive designed to mitigate the effects of the recession.
The closures will result in 269 job losses - 133 at Chorley, 76 at Didcot and a further 60 at the transport out-bases supporting the centres. There will be a 90-day consultation period for all affected employees.
A statement from the company said: "The changes are part of the company's continued focus on improving efficiency, reducing costs and realigning supply chain activities to the sales volumes in the current economic climate and to reflect branch closures and consolidation."
Wolseley UK md and ceo Europe Rob Marchbank said: "The prolonged nature and severity of the global economic recession and unprecedented market conditions are driving the need for greater productivity and to operate even more efficiently.
"Any job losses are regrettable, however, there is a need to adjust our business to the prevailing market conditions. We fully recognise our responsibilities to all individuals affected by this announcement and we will consult with them to ensure that they are dealt with in a fair and sensitive manner."
