Wolseley completes sale of Build Center
Published: 7 November 2011
Heating and plumbing product distributor completed the sale of its Build Center business to Jewson on Friday, November 4, following a review by the European Commission.
On July 25, Wolseley UK
announced that it had entered into a decision to sell Build Center to Jewson, part of the Saint-Gobain Building Distribution, for £145m. The sale was subject to a review by the European omission, which has now been completed.
Jewson parent company Saint-Gobain, has also agreed to purchase Wolseley's French plumbing merchant Brosette.
Announcing the completion of the sale, Wolseley said it felt that the market in which Build Center operates is no longer a core strategic business activity for the UK business.
Wolseley UK managing director Steve Ashmore said: "Knowing that Build Center is highly valued by Jewson, confirms that our decision was right for Build Center, as well as Wolseley UK. The decision to sell Build Center, following a strategic review, was made to create the right foundations to ensure Wolseley UK's continued future success. It is also fully aligned to Wolseley UK's strategic objectives to focus on being the best merchants in our chosen markets."
The firm also
sold its Electric Center brand to electrical equipment distributor Edmundson Electrical in July.
Build Center operates 155 branches, of which 86 are freehold, employing 1,600 people. It generated a turnover of £325m for the year ended July 31, 2011.
