IKEA in Reading has its doors firmly closed today after the death of a contract worker in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The man was reportedly crushed by a hydraulic lift in the loading bay of the store at around 2.30am.
Police, fire and ambulance crews were all called to the £10m Reading branch of IKEA, which only opened for business this summer. IKEA UK and Ireland deputy retail manager Javier Quinones released the following statement: " We are very saddened to confirm that this morning a contractor died in an incident on our site in Reading.
"The safety and security of everyone on our premises is always our highest priority and we are now supporting the Thames Valley Police with their investigation.
"The store will remain closed until further notice. Our thoughts are with the individual’s family at this time.”
Police have confirmed that an investigation into the death is now underway and that no arrests have been made. Environmental Health officers are also working with police.
