Essential reading for retailers and suppliers in the home improvement market

World of Sofas bought out of administration

Published: 14 March 2011
The company, set up by former directors of the collapsed Land of Leather chain, has been saved by "similar" management team to trade under the new Riverview Furniture name.
World of Sofas, run by four former directors of collapsed furniture chain Land of Leather, entered administration last month after just two years of trading.

However, the 12-strong retail chain, which was formed by Land of Leather Ltd's Steven Dowdall, Peter Ling, Brian Neilly and Paul Briant at the end of 2008, appears to have been saved again by an almost identical management team after appointing administrators last month.

According to The Sun, Berley Chartered Accountants, who is handling the administration, confirmed that a new company had bought World of Sofas' "assets, stock and nine stores" for £350,000.

The retail chain's website also now details Riverview Furniture as principal trading company, while the firm appears to have closed at least two of its UK stores, with outlets in Cardiff and Aberdeen no longer listed on the site.

Newly-formed Riverview, which was incorporated on January 24 of this year - a matter of weeks before World of Sofas entered administration in February - lists Mr Dowdall, Mr Neilly and Mr Briant as directors.

A story by Furnishing Report also revealed that Berley's Mark West explained the business had "been sold to a group of individuals, similar to those involved with the prior company".

This morning Berley Chartered Accountants would not confirm any reports.

I bought a corner sofa last may 2010, within 4 months it had sunk completely in the corner seat, they sent a polish guy out in February 2011, saying it was a manufacturer's fault and would be repaired, I waited 4 months and after many calls and ignored emails i got an email, giving me a credit note for less than I paid as a good will gesture, I went to the store in Lakeside Thurrock, to be told they knew nothing about an email or credit note, I picked a new corner unit and was told 12 weeks delivery it is now 15 weeks and no sofa, I have called them and get a cut off tone when I push button 1 or 2, I am absolutely disgusted with these cowboys it has been very upsetting and stressful, they should not be allowed to get away with this. The worse thing is I paid by cash and I have no way of getting any money or compensation from them.

Two new companies - Riverview Furniture Thurrock Ltd and Longseat Ltd - have been incorporated at Companies House in recent weeks, and one of these is thought to have taken over the assets of Riverview Furniture Ltd, which went into administration through SPW P&A earlier this month.

Ordered a sofa from them in April. After numerous calls around the estimated delivery date of mid May we were told it was expected in a shipment arriving 27 June. this was nonsense as the sofa is manufactured in the North of England by a well known business. Went to the store in Greenwich on Monday 4 July and demanded my 300 pound deposit back and full cancellation of the order. This was given to me on the spot as I had paid cash. The store is in the process of closing down with all stock on sale. I have since ordered the sofa from another supplier and expect it in the next 3 weeks.

It would be interesting for all readers if the Daily Record or Trading Standards would investagate Paul Briant, Steve Dowdall and Peter Ling to see if they have a history of being owners or shareholders of many other companies that have gone bust leaving people out of pocket.
I think they should be struck off from ever being owners or share holders of any other company for good.

As for the comment above about them loosing millions can he tell us how much they recieved in wages with land of leather when they worked there and how much they recieved for there shares when they first sold them then bought them back at a very low rate . This would be very interesting as the comment above suggests we should feel sorry for these clowns who have a history of companies between them that have failed.
I await a resopnce THE ROOSTER Cockadoodledoo

Mab... telephone 02076369094 to speak to the administrators of the now defunct company.. As I understand it, the finance company have no choice but to cancel your credit agreement as the company has gone out of business and can no longer honour their contract. Administrators should contact the credit finance company for you...

Paul Briant, Steve Dowdall and Peter Ling were previously directors of Land of Leather Ltd and had all resigned from the business between three and twelve months before its collapse.
The business at time it went into liquidation had two other executive directors and five other non executive directors operating it, all of whom are respected members of the city.

Briant, Dowdall and Ling personally lost over five million pounds between them when the business collapsed and Briant, Dowdall and Ling remain unpaid from their service contracts.

World of Sofas Ltd started trading some eight months after the collapse of Land of Leather Ltd and, with the exception of taking over empty stores, has no connection with Land of Leather Ltd.
The fact that all three did previously did work for the business along with seven other directors does not make this a direct link.
When World of Sofas Ltd went into administration, the directors were the majority creditors to the tune of over two million pounds.

Riverview Furniture Ltd has purchased all the assets of World of Sofas Ltd and is going to continue to trade the brand concentrating mainly in England.

All customer orders are being honoured and any customers wishing to cancel their order who paid by credit card or debit card to World of Sofas Ltd can claim full refunds from their card provider.
Customers who purchased goods on finance can simply cancel their order and credit agreement if they no longer wish to proceed with their order.
Customers who paid cash will receive their order providing that the balance is paid in full to the store when the goods arrive in stock.

Ordered a sofa in October 2010, was expecting delivery by Jan 2011. After several phonecalls I was told my sofa was at the dock but they had gone into administation and I needed to claim my money back via my bank. I had paid in full by debit card and only wish it had been a credit card! Was told I could buy my sofa cash (to the van drivers) with a 10% discount - if I still wanted it. Do you think I could get away with agreeing to that, having it delivered and then getting a heavy mob to tell the delivery men to get lost, after all I have already paid for the sofa once aleady!!! Total rip off. Makes me mad they are still trading as if nothing has happened.

We ordered a sofa from these people aswell, delivery was due now but we got a phone call last week from the store manager in glasgow telling us about administration,he said to contact my bank to get my money back(i had paid in full with a card),he said he would send a letter stating WOS were in administration, still waiting on the letter and no answer when i phone them either, thank god my bank has said i will get my money back anyway.
The store manager did say that he was 95% sure we would still get our sofa with 10% off,but with all the comments here about sofas falling apart then i dont think i want it now.

Makes you proud to be British doesn't it. This just highlights what a disgraceful and disgusting set of company law we peddle in this country. If you want to have a gamble with other peoples lives and money...go ahead, there aren't any consequence. These serial del boys are living proof that you can spend other peoples money living the high life. In fact this is Mr Dowdall's third or fourth attempt at this. A fine example of Great British business.
