Wyevale name change causes confusion
Published: 18 September 2009
It seems the recent decision to drop the Wyevale name in favour of more localised brands under the Garden Centre Group umbrella is causing some confusion at local level.
Edward Boult of Grovewell Garden Centres contacted DIY Week after his local Wyevale was renamed Canterbury Chartham Garden Centre.
Mr Boult, who opened Canterbury Garden Centre at Herne Common this spring said: "We obviously felt this to be too similar to our name and that it would cause confusion."
He continued: "We've had Wyevale customers coming in with Wyevale mail shot adverts, as well as stock intended for our centre being delivered and dropped off at Wyevale Chartham Centre. Only this week we had a staff member come into our Canterbury Garden Centre for a training course being held at Chartham!"
Mr Boult wrote to The Garden Centre Group after it rebranded its centre pointing out the potential for confusion but said, "they refused and even suggested that we change our name."
We contacted the Garden Centre Group for their comments about the potential confusion. Chief executive Nicholas Marshall told DIY Week: "We changed the name of Canterbury Chartham Garden Centre in June as the centre is very much at the heart of the community and the staff there wanted to change the name to suit the location of the garden centre.
"It opened more than 12 years ago and was originally called Canterbury Garden Centre, and it has very much established itself as a local garden centre that is part of the community."
