Essential reading for retailers and suppliers in the home improvement market

Amazon Prime Day "is a huge opportunity" for third-party retailers

Published: 22 June 2017 - Fiona Garcia

Figures reveal that the annual online one-day shopping event can offer a boost for third-party sellers on Amazon and other e-commerce retailers.

The third annual Amazon Prime Day - a one-day shopping event available exclusively to Amazon Prime customers in the UK - is expected to see the online giant launch thousands of deals across its departments every five minutes, complemented by a number of lead-up offers and competitions.

The event has become a major sales peak for the e-commerce market, with more offers than on Black Friday, but many traders believe it is purely beneficial for Amazon and its Prime membership, dismissing any sales potential for their own businesses. However, the massive traffic generated by the event means anyone selling on Amazon, including third-party merchants, are likely to benefit,

Figures from Volo Commerce demonstrate that third party retailers have reported huge increases in sales volumes on the day.

An infographic shows that on Amazon Prime Day last year British merchants trading on Amazon saw a 38% year-on-year uplift in gross merchandise value. During the week of Amazon Prime Day, online retailers sold 80% more tech products, 60% more home and garden merchandise and 22% more fashion items compared with the previous week. Overall, UK sellers saw a 46% jump in sales compared with the week before.

With an increasing number of retailers and brands now selling goods via Amazon as well as their own e-commerce channels, traders “leave money on the table” by not preparing properly for Amazon Prime Day, said Volo Commerce, which offers tips on how to get ahead for the big day and maximise revenue.

According to Amazon, the number of sellers and small businesses participating in Prime Day doubled last year and 30% of lighting deals were from small businesses and sellers.

Amazon is yet to announce the date of this year’s Prime Day but it is likely to take place in the second week of July.
